full circle

a glistening coat of rain soaked the street ahead

I was looking at you, you at me

everything was fine

a laugh at a superfluous joke

a glance at a green light

and then the crash

airbags and smoke

panicked breath and unsteady hands

frantic eyes surveying the damage

and a frantic mind aware of the consequences

crashed the car

cut the ties and burned the bridges

you’re a lost cause

after the smoke cleared, I thought about how I wouldn’t be able to see you now

we were supposed to go to the movies

instead, jagged fragments of life played out before us, projected onto a broken windshield

and we stood

and we watched

and we didn’t know what to do
